Brutha Gimel's Spin CityIn an effort to further explore the myriad and "Komplicated" musical tastes of the modern "post-Black" denizens of the world, we present Spin City, which will feature recommendations from some of the world’s finest DJs, Joining resident turntablist DJ Jedi, we're proud to present the musical musings of Brutha Gimel (also known as Gimel Hooper), a double threat who not only is well known for his skills on the wheels, but also as a spoken word artist of considerable renown and one of the co-founders of LA's long-running venue Da Poetry Lounge. We now present Gimel's favorites for this week …

  • "The Day," Curren$y feat. Mos Def, Jay Electronica
Let's get it started with some street element hip hop music. I"m a fan of that gritty underground music where the tracks are layered with fly horns that seem like they were sampled from some hungry jazz musician from the 1960's. "The Day" fits the bill and the bars spit by Jay and Curren$y are designed to punch fake MC's in the throat. I love it! Rugged hip hop for the heads to sprain their necks to.

  • "Chase," Slim Thug feat. Scarface, M.U.G
Yeah! I have to put it down for my hometown of Houston, Tx mayne. Once again, this one is for the heads who know what's up with that real down south sound, where the beats not only loosen the screws in your trunk but the percussion will keep you bouncing and bopping. The content is rather run of the mill in the hook but the flows are solid enough to keep hip hop heads interested and ready to get on their grind.

  • "Women Are The New Dogs," Saigon feat. Jovan Dais
Alright. Alright. The tables have turned in the club and the bedroom. Women are getting where they can now a days according to Saigon. He uses the art of story telling to bring home the title, "Women Are The New Dogs" and in the final verse he gives his theory of why the tables have turned. I think it's quite poignant and Jovan sits into the groove making the hook easy to follow with his riffs.

  • "27 (Amy Winehouse Dedication)," M.I.A.
I must admit. I am often intrigued when I see the name M.I.A. She has a very eclectic style and I appreciate her approach to the art form. This particular joint has a Portishead feel to it so prepare to zone out while M.I.A. pays her respect to Ms Winehouse.

  • "Love In Indigo," Escort
By now, you gotta know that I am fond of good uptempo club music. What can I say? I'm a DJ who likes to see people dancing. Tis why I chose "Love In Indigo" which calls you to the dance floor with a 90's house appeal a la Ce Ce Peniston. I like to call this "New Wave Disco." Let's go!

In addition to checking out Brutha Gimel out tonight at Da Poetry Lounge, be on the look out for the upcoming new mix, LapTop Diggin' Session.
